Winter-run steelhead are trickling into many rivers, but it's early yet and nobody's crowing about the action. River fishing for chum and late coho is fading, and never was spectacular anyway. Chinook catches on the marine waters have taken a bit of a dive over the past week, and some key northern areas close at the end of the day Friday. Probably the best bet lately has been chinook fishing on the saltchuck, and the best of that has been in central and south Puget Sound.

Choosing Salmon Fishing Line
September 4, 2007, 10:12 am
Which type of salmon fishing line you use on your fishing trip will often mean the difference between a successful day and one filled with a lot of snags, rats-nests and frustration. The right salmon fishing line will often be determined by the type of salmon you are going to be targetting during the day; there are specialty lines designed specifically for certain types of fishing conditions, and even standard lines will have varying results depending on the water you are fishing in.

Fly Fishing Reels for Freshwater Salmon Fishing
August 17, 2007, 2:59 pm
Catching any species of salmon on a fly means that you are in for a hell of a fight, so it is important that you use the right fly fishing reels for freshwater salmon fishing. Fly fishing reels for the most part have the same basic design, and the difference that will mean a great story with a picture or a steelhead to back you up and a great story about one that got away will often lie in the makeup of the reel itself. Here are some of the components you will want to look at in order to land those spawners when they are on their way upstream; always keep in mind that although the techniques and casting may be the same for salmon and trout, the salmon are the fish that are going to give a bigger fight in the landing.

Why do I need a baitcasting rod?
Well the first reason you want a baitcasting rod is because you are targetting Steelhead or Salmon. Baitcasting Rod Buyer's Guide
May 25, 2007, 8:54 am
Two basic types of rods dominate fishing - baitcasting and spinning. The selection of either is driven by the choice of reel, and that is driven by specific techniques as well as targeted species. The species of fish that you are going to target will have a major impact on the selection process. For larger species, many anglers prefer the baitcasting option.

Selecting Salmon Fishing Gear
April 30, 2007, 9:05 am

Tackle is important, of course, but you also want to make sure that you take other gear into consideration, such as fishing rods, fishing reels, the type of fishing line that you are going to use, terminal tackle such as hooks and weights, and of course baits and lures.

Basics of Flats Fishing
April 20, 2007, 8:23 am
My friend was trying hard to direct me to a bonefish that was tailing on the flat only 80 feet from the boat, yet I couldn’t pick up anything.
"There, he did it again." I heard from the back of the boat as my friend poled us closer. "Can you see him? He’s right in front of you now. Fifty feet."
I panicked and fumbled with the mess of line as I watched the fish turn and slowly come my way. I felt as though I was hyperventilating, or maybe, I wasn’t breathing at all. I shook the tangle; I tried to cast. My friend, as excited as I was, said "Just do anything, roll cast, throw it at him, he will eat anything."
What’s the lesson I forgot? (more...)
