Good news for hunters and drivers

State Rep.

Many of you will recall previous articles when I have written about the complaints that I have received about deer in the 88th District. A recent meeting with Division of Wildlife personnel about this problem was very productive! In fact, I believe that hunters and drivers alike will be pleased to hear of some of the proposed changes to our hunting laws.

The deer harvest in 2005 was less than those harvested in 2004. Due to these concerns about an increased deer herd wildlife officials have added a weekend to the gun season on Saturday, December 16, 2006 and Sunday, December 17, 2006. They estimate an additional 10,000 deer will be harvested that weekend and hunters and those who drive on our roadways will both be pleased with the larger number of deer taken.

Additionally, I have submitted a proposal which will allow the deer gun season to begin on the Saturday after Thanksgiving instead of the following Monday. This would add another weekend for hunting and, since most of us work and find it difficult to get off through the week, would result in an even larger deer harvest. This proposal would result in additional deer killed and would, in the long run, reduce the deer population in Ohio.

I was greatly encouraged by my conversation with wildlife officers Kevin Behr from Adams County and Allan Wright from Brown County. They informed me of some new hunting opportunities for the disabled. For individuals who are disabled and have never hunted deer before, the first annual Wheeling Sportsman’s Event in Adams County will be held Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29, 2006. Adams County businessman Jack McCoy and his family have graciously agreed to permit deer hunting on their Adams County property for handicapped individuals. These individuals can obtain an apprentice license to hunt deer for the first time! Officer Wright is also encouraging volunteers to call him to help facilitate this event and to serve as guides for the disabled. We are hopeful that some of our disabled veterans will be able to participate in this event.

Officer Wright also informed me of the Second Annual Brown County Wheeling Sportsman’s Event for dove hunting. This past year was the first time they conducted the handicapped dove hunt and congratulations to those involved for their help in offering this opportunity to the disabled.

For those farmers who have experienced deer damage to past crops and who are concerned about liability for injuries to hunters who are given permission to hunt on their farms, Ohio Revised Code 1533.181 exempts the land owner from any and all responsibility for injuries caused to the hunter. The Ohio Farm Bureau works closely with Division of Wildlife personnel and this cooperation tends to benefit both as we try to reduce the deer population in Ohio. I am greatly encouraged with the positive input from the Division of Wildlife and I believe working together we can greatly reduce the deer population in Southern Ohio.

Last week we mentioned the large crowd that the Brown County General Hospital Foundation drew for their fund raiser and this week I want to mention the Clermont County "Salute to Leaders" Awards Banquet which will be held at the Holiday Inn at Eastgate on February 23, 2006 at 6 pm. Many of the leaders of Clermont County will be recognized at this event and I would encourage anyone interested in the future of Clermont County to attend and help recognize proven leadership of individuals who have stood up to help make Clermont County a better place to live and work.
