Ohio deer-gun hunting season starts

The turkey has been eaten and the holiday season has begun. But today starts another season that many Ohioans wait for all year long, deer-gun hunting season.

Ohio’s ever-popular deer-gun season begins today and goes through Dec. 3. Besides the week long opportunity for deer hunting, hunters will get an additional two days, Dec. 16 and 17, to get that ever prized white-tailed deer.

‘‘Ohio’s hunters told us they wanted more weekend days to hunt, so an extra Saturday and Sunday were added this year. This is also the first year for the apprentice license, which gives deer hunters a great new chance to mentor a friend for deer hunting,” said Steven A. Gray, chief of the Division of Wildlife.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, the apprentice hunting license allows new hunters, both youth and adult, to give hunting a try under the mentorship of a licensed adult, prior to completing a hunter education course.

During last year’s deer-gun season a total of 116,855 deer were killed in the seven day period, which was down 7 percent from 2004. In 2006, 1,742 deer were killed in Trumbull County, 748 in Mahoning and 763 in Portage. Tuscawarus County led the way last year, tagging 5,021 deer.

With the extra two days, an expected 115,000 to 120,000 deer will be killed over the nine days, according to ODNR. Approximately 400,000 hunters are expected to participate in this year’s season, including many out-of-state hunters.

For the next week, hunters can begin hunting one half-hour before sunrise to sunset.
