Logan Pickard finds himself On the Trail
MECOSTA COUNTY (WJRT) - (01/07/07)--Some say the responsibility of every hunter is to introduce young people to the great outdoors in order keep the heritage alive.
It's really important to get prospective young hunters introduced to deer camp because deer camp is a big part of what hunting is all about.
Logan Pickard is nine years old and this happens to be his second year up at deer camp by Big Rapids with his dad Terry Pickard.
"It's actually fun because you [Site Reporter; Tom] got a deer and my dad got to shoot at two...but missed 'em," he said.
Next year Logan will get to do some hunting himself. He can hunt small game as well as archery hunt for deer, and he is ready for it.
Logan also got to spend some time tracking a deer on Friday evening. "It was pretty fun 'cause we were looking and having fun in the wilderness," Logan explained. And he saw plenty more the rest of the weekend. "We saw about nine deer on Saturday night. Four does and five bucks I think."
Unfortunately the bucks were not big enough to shoot, but they did end up taking a few does home, which provided pretty good eating according to Logan.
Up here we try to let the little ones go so they can grow up and we end up taking a few does out of here which are pretty good eating. Did you have some deer last night?
Hopefully Logan will get his own deer next year.
