Girl Scout Attacked by Bear While Camping

Imagine camping with your friends and waking up to a tug on your sleeping bag only to find a bear claw at the other end. How one New Jersey girl scout survived a real-life bear scare.

There are camp fire stories you tell ... and there are camp fire stories you live. This one -- at least for a group of New Jersey girl scouts -- is destined to be told again and again. But first it had to be lived.

Celeste" "I've been camping all my life." 11-year-old Celeste Tietz and her troop were camping in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains.

Terri: "We were up at Camp Mosey Wood."It was supposed to be two nights in a tent.
Celeste: "I was sleeping in my cot."
Terri: "The bear put his paw underneath the tarp."
Cathy: "Held onto her sleeping bag."
Terri: "The claws are very sharp, like a razor blade."
Cathy: "Pulled her off the cot."
Celeste: "it totally woke me up. Whomp!"
NAT: She pats the bag.
Celeste: "From the bottom, he started grabbing me out." Celeste would have gone out with the sleeping bag.
Cathy: "We found her sleeping bag 8 to 10 feet outside of the tent." Instead, she hit one of the tent's poles, grabbed it and wiggled out of the bag.
Celeste: "It was terrifying."Then she jumped onto her friend's bed.
Celeste: "I was like Maggie, Maggie wake up, something just stole my sleeping bag. Then, she's like, 'Celeste: are you sure you're not hallucinating?' And I'm like, 'no I can't be hallucinating if my sleeping bag's outside of the tent.'" The two screamed for help as a bear lurked outside.
Celeste" She was about that long, that high." Celeste's mom was one of the parents supervising the trip, she rushed over took the kids to the camp mess hall, where they spent the night. "Any child who camps there until this bear is captured and removed is at risk."

Camp Mosey Wood is closed to tent campers for the next two weekends. Celeste is a bit bruised ... but she says she'll camp again. She's in her seventh year as a girl scout. A vest full of badges attests to that.
"That one for wildlife." There's no official badge for a bear scare, but that's what moms are for.
"It's a bear mark." And it's a symbol of a lesson learned.
Celeste: "If you think bears are your friends, think again."
