A Bath County hunter has died over the weekend and is the first fatality in Virginia's deer hunting season that state game officials are aware of.
Radcliffe Vernon of Hot Springs, 36, was hunting alone trying to get a start on early muzzleloading season, just west of the Blue Ridge. Radcliffe was found dead Saturday morning in the Bath County area of Lake Moomaw.
Sgt. Jerry Jones, who is a conservation officer for the department of Game and Inland Fisheries, has reported that Mr. Vernon was not wearing blaze orange, which is a vital survival color when hunting in highly populated areas, and is also a state law during general firearm deer season, although there is no indication of foul play, Sgt. Jones said it's too early to say what exactly occured in this shooting.
Muzzleloader deer season starts November 3rd east of the Blue Ridge and although blaze orange isn't a state law for muzzleloader hunting, it's strongly recommended to avoid tragedies like this one. Don't take the chance - gear up properly and have the appropriate survival equipment first and foremost.
